How to Replace A Spa Cover in Canada
The need to replace a spa cover may roll around every 5-7 years. If it is the first time the cover is replaced, many hot tub owners get confused about the options and which type of cover to pick. Here is some information to help clarify replacement spa cover ordering issues.
If you cover came with your spa, chances are the spa manufacturer did not make your cover, but merely ordered it from a spa cover manufacturer. So just as the spa manufacturer did, you can also order a cover for your spa without needing to buy it from the manufacturer that sold you the spa.
If your spa is in a Northern climate or in Canada, you will want to get a thicker cover, even if your spa originally came with a thinner one. In our climate that gets snow and ice, a thicker cover will not only insulate your spa better and lower heating costs, but will also hold up the snow better until you can brush it off. In the winter months it is important to always keep the spa cover clear if snow and ice as the weight can damage the cover or create pits that can later cause water to puddle and ruin the cover early.
Most covers are rectangular or square. Newer spas have rounded corners on the cover. If you have a circular cover, you just need to measure the radius of the circle. If you are ordering a rectangular or square replacement cover, just measure the old cover to get the dimensions of the cover. If the old cover is no longer true to form but has expanded or broken, then you can measure the spa, but carefully measure outside the spa shell from acrylic edge to acrylic edge. Care must be taken to make sure there are no special obstructions or a cabinet lip that may cause issues with properly sizing the cover. Most covers can simply be measured acrylic edge to acrylic edge or better yet the length and width from the existing cover.
If the spa has a curved corner, then you need to measure the radius of the corner. You can get it easily by placing a carpenters square across the corner and reading how many inches from the imaginary point that the sides would intersect if the cover did not have a rounded corner to the place where the cover starts to curve from the straight edge. Usually measurements of the radius are in the 5-8 inch range.
Finally, the spa skirt length measures the flap that protects the acrylic sides around the spa. Usually this dimension is 3-5 inches or so.
